Dave
Roybal moved to Austin in 1994 when the "anything goes, just
play it loud" Red River district meant the neighboring punk
clubs- the Blue Flamingo and Emo's. Like-minded garage rockers
rallied around the Saturday night KOOP radio program "the
Garage Show" and he soon found himself volunteering at the
station. He inherited the weekday local music show "Live
Bait", and for three cycles of South By Southwest chronicled
the gritty underbelly of Capitol City's maturing entertainment
district. Live Bait became synonymous with the bare-knuckle rock
and roll of the Eastside Suicides, the Riverboat Gamblers, the
Sons of Hercules, and Pink Swords. When he didn't have bands on
the air promoting their upcoming shows, he was recording demos
for them in his concrete basement. Some of these sessions were
released by Gearhead Records (CA), Dropkick Records (AUS) and
Rubble Records (TX). As a columnist and critic for both Rank and
Revue and Reloaded Monthly he's done cover stories
> on visionary alternative rock impresario, Tim Kerr, and rascally
gubernatorial hopeful, Kinky Friedman.
