San Antonio is known to many music fans and critics as the “Heavy Metal Capitol of the World.” This catch-phrase held true for the 1970’s, 80’s and 90’s. The city’s musical influence was exercised via local disc jockey Joe Anthony and KMAC/KISS radio stations. Largely through his efforts and the power of those frequencies innumerable acts gained their first footholds in the US, most prominently AC/DC, Judas Priest, Rush and Triumph. However, this simplistic overview ignores San Antonio’s historical importance and influence on the current face of popular music.
A few quick facts and observations:
*On November 23, 1936, Robert Johnson recorded his songs for the first time in San Antonio at the Gunter Hotel, which served the recording industry in the 1930's by providing suitable accommodations to record Hillbilly, Blues, Jazz and Mexican ethnic music. The records provided a multi-cultural alternative to the more familiar songs of the day and flavored American popular music for years to come.
*The legendary Doug Sahm sprang from San Antonio in the early 1960’s. With his band the Sir Douglas Quintet he exported his unique rocking blend of country, soul and Mexican music to San Francisco during the heyday of psychedelia, leaving a hefty boot print on that era. This influence carried through the “Cosmic Cowboy” period and is felt to this day in the alt-country movement. Though less frequently cited than Gram Parson and the Flying Burrito Bros., his presence no doubt still looms large.
* San Antonio has long been a focal point for the Latino music industry as a business and recording center for the regional styles of Mexican music and the evolving ethnic-pop blends that sprang from these beginnings. This influence continues to be felt in the World Music and Latino Pop genres.
* World-class weirdoes, the Butthole Surfers germinated and made their first ground-breaking art-damaged, indie rock records in San Antonio. Eventually achieving world-wide fame and a degree of commercial success, the band constantly pressed the boundaries of the acceptable, upsetting prudes from coast to coast with their live-performances and recordings. Their influence across the spectrum of modern music is undeniable.

So, the intention of “A Town South of Austin” is not to give an overview of the city’s current music scene, but rather to capture the flavor of San Antonio itself by presenting acts that provide a collective nod to those that came before them and continue to add vigor to a style that hints at country, blues, garage rock and conjunto but has no name.

8:30 pm Sexto Sol with special guest Vernon “Spot” Barnett
One could spend a lot of time trying to describe Sexto Sol’s sound. Simply imagine the Carlos Santana Band and the Small Faces jamming out together, fusing Latin rhythms with a highly polished pub-rock delivery and attitude. They will be joined by San Antonio tenor sax legend Spot Barnett.

9:30 pm The Krayolas with Augie Meyers
The Krayolas have been dubbed the “Tex-Mex Beatles” and that perfectly describes their two minute and forty-five second “mexibeat” powerpop gems. The band has re-emerged after a decade plus hiatus and we will be promoting a new album – their first in 21 years -- called "La Conquistadora" recently recorded with Augie Meyers and Max Baca.

10:30 pm Snowbyrd
What can you say about band that draws comparisons to everyone from Roxy Music to the Kings of Leon,Calexico and Pavement? You just have to see them to understand.

11:30 pm Los # 3 Dinners
If they had set one of those wacky 60’s comedies about the sexual revolution in San Antonio, Los # 3 Diners would be the band jammin’ in the disco while Walter Matthau was trying to get laid. These boys are stoned, immaculate and timeless.

12:30 pm Shawn Sahm & the Tex-Mex Experience
Probably the youngest person to ever grace the cover of Rolling Stone Magazine, Shawn Sahm picks up where his Dad left off with Texas Tornados. This band is high energy Tex-Mex Rock and the word on the street is they’re kicking ass and taking names.
